"Color Game" as it's currently named in its Work in Progress state, is my foray into "full on" game development, meaning I want to make everything, including the art and music etc. entirely by myself. With my other project Wild West Racing I bought the graphical assets, used a online-multiplayer plugin which makes writing networking code significantly easier and I plan on buying music and voice lines to fit the theme.

So what is the game about? It is a 2D Puzzle Platformer, in which your character has the ability to control and
alter the world around him, changing the color of his surroundings and their behavior with it. 
Pressing a button will bring up a color wheel from which to pick your color and upon closing the wheel, the world will color itself in. During playtime the character will unlock more and more colors, until the color wheel has been entirely filled.

Every color will have its effect on the world and its elements. By now, the only colors I implemented are light blue and dark blue. Changing the color will for example make a platform move to a specified location, and upon changing it back to white it will move back. Combining two different tones of blue with two different destinations can already make for some tricky puzzles, you could try it out and see if you can collect all flowers.
         



A showcase of the very first platform

As of now there are only 4 levels to the game, as it's still in early development. The game is also lacking any form of story, as to why the character possesses this ability and what his goal or motivation is. That is an aspect I definitely still want to work on but it's not really a priority, as I want the game to remain relatively cryptic and I feel like a complicated or overloaded story does not fit into this platformer puzzle type game.

Today I set out to create some background images for my game. I was unsure about what exactly should be in the background, as I have very little thought out so far, about where the game takes place and what is happening in the grand scheme of things. one thing I am sure of is that the environments, especially the backgrounds, should be entirely in grayscale, and then maybe be colored when the character picks a color to transform the world into.  The question arises how exactly one realizes a background. I could make a gigantic image which lays behind the level and the character 'moves along it'. i would have to create the levels, then create an Image the size and shape of the level and design it to specifically match that level. That would be an incredibly time consuming process and also I would have to actually put something worth while there. The Fine Balance of Difficulty

 The Theory First Difficulty in videogames is sadly not the easiest thing to balance. The experience and skill varies so wildly between players, that it is next to impossible to balance a game to be enjoyable but challenging to everyone. As Wild West Racing  is a multiplayer racing game though, it kind of balances itself, as good players will just reach the goal faster. Regardless of the pure "difficulty" of  a track, like the amount of obstacles it has, etc.  So my main goal is to make the game accessible  for less experienced players, while still providing the good players with enough possibilities to show their skill and further improve at the game.  In this blog post, I want to focus on the first of those two problems, making the game more accessible.
